Assist hook size to jig weight

An assist hook hangs from the head of the jig on a short PE cord instead of being fixed to the body. That is what lets the jig flutter freely and lets a fish find the point from any angle. Size it to the jig, not to the fish you hope for.

Hook size Matching jig weight Typical use
1/0–2/0 20–60 g light inshore, micro jigging
2/0–3/0 40–120 g standard slow pitch
3/0–4/0 80–200 g medium deep slow pitch
5/0 100–250 g deeper jigging, amberjack
6/0 120–300 g power slow pitch
11/0–13/0 200–400 g heavy deep ocean, tuna and GT

Why assist hooks instead of trebles

Trebles hang under the jig, snag the bottom and lever out on hard mouths. Twin assists sit above the centre of gravity: fewer hang-ups on rock, better hook-up ratios on the drop, and a second point when a fish takes side-on. Roughly 70–90% of slow pitch bites happen while the jig is falling with slack line – sharpness and cord length matter more than anything else in that moment.

Rigging by fishery

Slow pitch (Japan, Korea, US): twin front assists, hook points set about a third to half of the jig's length. Mediterranean dentex: symmetric twin front plus twin rear, hooks facing each other without crossing. Amberjack and snaggy rock: front-only twins, which cut hang-ups dramatically. Deep water: glow or tinsel-dressed hooks help fish find the lure where light fails.

Materials that matter

Forged high-carbon steel for bend resistance, multi-strand PE assist cord for shock absorption, and a welded solid ring rather than a split ring at the load path. Rinse in fresh water after every trip – salt crystals dull a point faster than fish do.

Frequently asked questions

What size assist hook for a 120 g jig? 3/0–4/0 is the working range; go 5/0 for amberjack and heavy current.

One hook or two? Two at the head increases hook-up rate; one reduces snagging over rough ground.

How long should the assist cord be? Set the point around a third to half of the jig length – longer swings freely but misses short strikes.
